We recently met with the CEO of the Free Representation Unit (FRU), David Abbott. During our conversation it became apparent just how valuable experience gained through the FRU can be for any budding legal professional.
The FRU are a charity who assist those that are not eligible for legal aid and cannot afford a lawyer. Work is carried out by volunteers, mostly law students and professionals in the early stages of their career. You would assist your clients while being supervised by a senior legal officer, but you attend the hearing alone and are responsible for the advocacy.
The training the provided by the FRU will give you important advocacy, case management and client facing skills and knowledge in the application of law. For more information take a look here - www.thefru.org.uk/volunteers/attending-the-training-days
There will be a round of training with the FRU which takes place on the following days:
Employment: Saturday 11th May, 10am-4pm
Booking will close Thursday 9th May
Social Security: Saturday 18th May, 10am-4pm
Booking will close on Thursday 16th May
There is also an excellent opportunity for a 15-month paid internship with the FRU. We are confident this could be the ideal stepping stone for your career, with many candidates going on to pupillage. For more information take a look here - http://www.thefru.org.uk/vacancies
